Mel Gibson: Iraq War Pointless

Making the rounds for his new movie, Apocalypto, releasing in December, Mel Gibson appeared in Austin at Fantastic Fest, and unleashed a spout against the Iraq War:

(Reuters) In describing its portrait of a civilization in decline, Gibson said, “The precursors to a civilization that’s going under are the same, time and time again,” drawing parallels between the Mayan civilization on the brink of collapse and America’s present situation. “What’s human sacrifice,” he asked, “if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?”

I hate to be one of those guys that points out how convenient the publicity is, because that’s boring, but come on:  movie screening, controversial comments that get you on the top of Drudge.  Someone took Intro to P.R.!

But we have to give the soldiers some credit - the Iraq war is a success to a point beyond being totally worthless, believe it or not.  Would liberals who claim “we’d be better off without this war” really feel better if we just rounded up a few thousand soldiers, threw them in a pit of lava and didn’t go in Iraq?

It’d be the lesser of two evils, with the same amount of human “sacrifice,” and the world would supposedly hate us less.  Why does every anti-Republican argument meet its logical end with human sacrifice and/or dancing around a pit of lava?

Cool aside note:  For what it’s worth, Tynan of BPN Interview fame (link on the right) met Gibson this past weekend and found him nice and charismatic.  Worth reading.
