NYC restaurants look out!

This just in: according to a Yahoo News article, health officials in New York City are proposing a city-wide ban on artificial trans fatty acids in foods served by restaurants. Better known on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil, these fatty acids can be found in many food items that we consume every day: margarine, doughnuts, french fries, pies (from the crust), chips, and so on. If this measure passes, the NYC health department will certainly be on a role, as it is going on three years now since it got a measure to ban smoking in restaurants passed.

Chicago already has a semi-ban in place, and the country of Denmark has banned use of these fatty acids as well, forcing McDonald’s to find an alternative oil for fries in its Denmark establishments.

So what do you think of this? Is this an example of concerned health officials looking out for your well-being, or is this a matter of big government gone wild? You be the judge on the BPN message boards.
