Government/Politics, What's Shakin'? »
I’m being ironic in the post title. Fred Thompson can take his sweet time for the ‘08 election because it’s still about a year and a half away.
Still, for the first real time, it looks like Fred’s getting serious about announcing a run.
Mr. Thompson is creating a committee that will let him begin raising money towards a full-blown national campaign, supporters said today.
You don’t go around forming committees for things you aren’t really sure about, unless you’re already in office. Zing.
His moves come as Republicans have failed to coalesce around …

Richie McRicherton Mitt Romney is saying he’ll decline the President’s salary if elected, in an obvious attempt to seem humble in the face of his status as the richest presidential candidate around.
Well, technically he’d accept the salary and then donate it to charity. You know what this means? Vote for Romney, or else you hate orphans!
It’s a nice gesture, of course, but come on. If a Democrat said something like this, I’d admonish it as an obvious attempt at buying more votes. As a candidate with a ton of obstacles …

Although I’ve made a lot of points about Global Warming and how phoney it might be, it’s always good to hear that we pollute less anyway.
It’s being reported that the U.S. actually dropped carbon dioxide emissions in 2006, which coincided with a cooler climate over the winter.
While this was happening, the U.S. economy grew by 3.3 percent, which means this is the first time that carbon dioxide went down and the economy grew since the last Republican was in office. I say that, but it wasn’t Bush. According …

For a woman who was once willing to camp outside of Dubya’s Crawford, TX ranch in order to talk to him, this is pretty unexpected.
Cindy Sheehan, the California mother who became an anti-war leader after her son was killed in Iraq, declared Monday she was walking away from the peace movement.
She said her son died “for nothing.”
Interestingly, she wrote online that she’s fed up with the inability of Democratic politicians to bring an end to the war. What, doesn’t she know about their whole “bleed the troops dry” thing? Sure, …

Google, the company that has the famous motto “Don’t be evil,” has once again failed to recognize Memorial Day on their website.
Last year, Google didn’t do it either, leading to some criticize, since Google will celebrate just about anything. I don’t get it – Memorial day isn’t a very political holiday.
Google celebrated Earth Day even – see it in the Google archives – with an iceberg logo.

This is both a non-story and a story. A breakthrough in cancer screening that could allow doctors to find out your predispositions to certain types of cancers could be happening. The problem is that it hasn’t even happened. Scientists are simply expecting it to happen.
Researchers are confident that their findings will allow a screening programme, in which the inherited risk of developing cancer can be assessed for every patient, to be in place in an estimated 12-15 years.
So it’s not really news, because nothing has actually happened except …

I woke up today to a bright Milwaukee day, thinking “hey, my column is supposed to be in the paper today.” I walked to work, looked up the Journal-Sentinel’s website on my computer, and disappointingly didn’t see my column. Huh, I figured. They must have moved me.
Then, I was informed by an editor that the higher-ups had a problem with it, and it was yanked last-minute and replaced with Saturday’s column.
Oddly, my column featured the following quote:
With network news, you’re letting your window of the world filter …

It’s Friday, almost weekend time, so I thought I’d share a little wildcard post with you all. Here are some of history’s biggest drinkers, according to Wikipedia:
John Barrymore – supposedly drank over 600 barrels of hard liquor in his day
Frank Sinatra once said “Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy”.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was a total drunk – read Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast”
Speaking of Hemingway, who was he to make fun? He was a drunk too.
Speaking of writers, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and Dylan …

Drudge scared me today with a headline that reads:
Politicians weigh Net access tax…
I know. Most of you who are reading this probably can’t imagine a world without the internet, and neither can I. I pay good money for my internet connection, but that’s it. Some people say the government has to stay out of women’s wombs. I say it definitely has to stay away from my sweet, sweet internet.
Luckily, Drudge is a bit of a exaggerator. The only thing the politicians are actually weighing is whether or not to make …

At the glorious BipolarNation.com Forums, there’s a lot of argument that goes on. One of the goals of this site was for me to learn how to argue efficiently, know when to pick my battles, and further develop my sense of political understanding. (Those all rank well under “$$$$”)
With that in mind, I’d like to point out 10 ways I think that people, including myself, reveal that they’re not all too certain about their point in the first place:
1. The “Topic” Shift
Nothing says “I don’t know what I’m saying, but …
