Baltimore On Lockdowns To Fight Crime

Here’s taking a bite out of crime:

Under [a new] plan, the [Baltimore] mayor could declare “public safety act zones,” which would allow police to close liquor stores and bars, limit the number of people on city sidewalks, and halt traffic during two-week intervals.

This is awesome.  Those of you who know me know that I’m generally small government - which is true - but if we’re going to spend money on something useful, let’s spend it hard.

Milwaukee, where I currently live, is also facing rising homicide rates, and I don’t doubt that a lockdown like this would absolutely bring down crime.  In fact, let’s make it worse than closing down liquor stores.  We can beat Baltimore.  Let’s post Shock Troops on street corners and watch the crime rate fall to zero.  That’s spending we can all use.

The problem with these lockdowns is that politicians will only give them a token effort.  Our system of checks and balances won’t let anything drastic happen - even though a drastic problem often calls for a drastic solution.

Token hippie, take it away:

Councilman Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr., a mayoral hopeful, said Curran’s idea was an interesting concept but it raised questions about civil liberties.

“We have to make sure we’re not declaring martial law,” he said.

Know what?  Boo hoo.  This is exactly the wussification I was talking about - and all it will do is make sure that nothing significant gets accomplished.  Loosen the slack on the executive branch a little, “Keiffer.”

I mean, at this point (more homicides in Baltimore than last year already), why not just experiment with solutions?  If it doesn’t work, drop it after 30 days.  No harm done.  If it does work, however, you have a blueprint for crime-ridden cities like Detroit and Milwaukee.
