Attention College Grads

It looks like 2007 is the year for college graduates looking for job offers.

According to excerpts from an article titled “Graduates find employers coming to call” by Stephanie Armour in the Money section of USA Today (Friday, 5/18/07):

As the school year draws to a close, new minted graduates are emerging into one of the best job markets in years.

Companies are scrambling to get the best and brightest. Employers are dangling perks such as signing bonuses and flat-screen TVs to woo this year’s college graduates.

Employers plan to hire nearly 20% more new college graduates during the current academic year than the year before, according to a spring 2007 job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Nearly 60% said they plan to hire more grads this year than during the 2005-06 school year.

Graduates in especially hot demand: business majors, engineers and those in computer-related fields.

Starting pay is also on the rise. A NACE salary survey found nearly all majors–26 out of 29–would see a boost in salaries. Marketing graduates should see the biggest rise, with their average offer rising 10.3% to $41,285. The only declines were reported in nursing, some agricultural sciences and political science.

Here are my thoughts on all of this. First off, this article seems to offer a great explanation as to why it took Dan Kenitz around five months or so to land a job (as he was a 2006 graduate).

Second, take a look at the very last sentence of the article I cited…I was a Political Science major! But I’m not the slighest bit worried. After all, I work for BPN, the coolest site on the Internet, and I wrote a book while still in college. How many graduates can say that? HUH? Clearly, this study failed to take Aaron Robertson’s unique accomplishments into consideration.

Last, I find this observation interesting: Marketing majors will see a great increase in salary offers this year. Now, even though I was a Political Science major, I’m BPN’s VP of Marketing. I may not have a formal education in marketing, but I’ve learned a great deal on Internet marketing since I assumed this title 14 months ago. I look at these marketing salaries and just laugh, because I know that as BPN’S VP of Marketing, I’ll be making 10 times as much within the next couple of years.
