Morons Decide What You Know
In another edition of “why mainstream news is horrible,” we have this. An article from MSNBC talking about the bias of journalists and how freely they spend toward supporting particular political candidates. This is particularly for BPN Forum member Flarking Smoo, who claims there’s no liberal bias in the media.
MSNBC.com identified 144 journalists who made political contributions from 2004 through the start of the 2008 campaign, according to the public records of the Federal Election Commission. Most of the newsroom checkbooks leaned to the left: 125 journalists gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Only 17 gave to Republicans. Two gave to both parties.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily prove media bias, as it’s a small sampling, and who you spend money on doesn’t necessarily reflect your reporting.
But it does establish one clear point: that a majority of today’s editors and reporters are liberals who went to liberal art colleges, spend money liberally on liberals, and liberal liberal liberal. Get it? They’re liberal.
A good reporter should be able to tell a story without you knowing how the reporter leans. That’s actually quite rare, and that’s where the argument heats up. “You just want to read into it,” say liberals. “There’s no bias, you want to sound like the weaker party here.”
At least conservatives know where we own things. Talk radio is overwhelmingly conservative, although that seems to be in a vacuum.
Interestingly, TV is very, very liberal, with Fox News being the only thing close to conservatism. Oddly, it beats every other cable news channel like CNN owes them money.
There will probably be no way to ever prove a bias exists, but here’s some evidence that, yes, reporters lean left. Some lean right (Forbes often leans right). The important thing is to be able to read between the lines.
