Sticking it to Illegal-friendly Businesses

Greetings loyal BPN fans, it’s been a while since I posted a main page story. Hope everything is going well for you, and as always, thanks for visiting and helping us to make this a great site.

Okay, so let’s get down to some good ol’ fashion debate here.

Yesterday’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel featured an interesting story in its Metro section about Green Bay, Wisconsin—yes, the same city that hosts the Packers, in what is in BPN’s official editorial stance one of the NFL’s most over-rated teams, despite a slew of crappy records the last few seasons. Anyway, that’s a whole other issue.

Turns out that the City Council passed an ordinance on Tuesday that would bar area businesses from receiving any contracts, licenses, or grants from the City if they hire illegal immigrants. Green Bay is the first city in Wisconsin to make such a move.

The next day, the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council declared, in the words of its chairman, Matt Hollenbeck,

…we are divorcing ourselves from the mayor’s office as an organization.

I don’t get it Mr. Hollenbeck…leave the mayor’s office because the City wants to curb illegal immigration, which bear in mind, is illegal? Shouldn’t you remain in the office as a voice for the legal Hispanic community?

Now, I’m all for meaningful immigration reform. I back the hotly debated proposal by President Bush that oddly enough, pairs a conservative from Texas and perhaps the Senate’s most liberal voice, Ted Kennedy, on the same team. But until that bill passes, if it ever does, the illegal immigrants in Green Bay are committing illegal acts. That’s the bottom line. So I don’t blame the City for wanting to obey federal law by giving business owners contracts, licenses, and grants on the condition that they only hire U.S. citizens or legal residents.

What are your thoughts? Did the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council have a legitimate point for leaving the mayor’s office, or are they a bunch of whiners that just gave up a powerful position to speak for the legal Hispanic community?

Let the debate begin!
