Really, Really, Really Bad Day for Bush
Things aren’t going so well for Bush, which isn’t new news since about 2003, but yesterday was a particularly bad day for him:
Ding, dong, the immigration bill is finally dead - after being put on Terry Schiavo-style life support in the past couple of weeks. The Senate voted 53-46 (oddly put at “46 to 53″ by CNN; maybe I’m not familiar with these things) not to advance the bill, meaning that the 12 million illegals here in the United States are going to have the same situation for a while.
The bill, supposedly a “compromise,” was really just a liberal bill that happened to include McCain’s name on it, as mostly Democrats voted for a bill and mostly Republicans voted against it. A lot of people switched sides, however, including three freshmen Democratic senators who all voted against it.
A number of senators switched their votes from yes to no, including presidential hopeful Sam Brownback and John Warner.
Now that that silly thing is over with, Dubya has a lot more to deal with suddenly.
President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers’ demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.
I’m not sure at this point whether this could turn into a scandal or not, but it’s the first time the priviledge has been used since 2001. Democrats, like any majority in Congress with an opposing President, are probably going to push this as far as they can, saying they don’t like Bush’s “improper political influence.”
Please. At least put it in other words.
