No One Wins (Except Libby)

When President Bush “commuted” (drove to work?) Scooter Libby this week, he had to have known that he would get totally blasted for it. At this point, if he goes to buy a box of Reese’s Pieces without five security guards, he has to know that he’ll probably get shot at.

So the question to Bush is: why? Is it really worth it to do Libby a favor? Unless you’re so well-aware of your enduring legacies - Iraq, terrorism and angering everyone - that you just don’t care anymore, I don’t see any other reason to “commute” Libby.

In an especially apt simile, the Democrats are flocking to this like flies to poop batter. Hillary Clinton, cronyist extraordinairre, has been particularly outspoken:

“What we saw today was elevating cronyism over the rule of law. And what we saw today was further evidence that this administration has no regard whatsoever for what needs to be held sacred,” she told the BBC.

Hillary Clinton should talk - those words might have a little more sting coming from them if they came from Obama. It’s like hearing Hillary criticize someone for having manly thighs.

Mitt Romney had this to say to reporters who had nothing better to do:

“I believe that the circumstances of this case, where the prosecutor knew that there had not been a crime committed, created a setting where a decision of this nature was reasonable,” the New York Times quoted Mr Romney as saying on the campaign trial in Iowa.

Whoever’s right or wrong, Presidential candidates are turning into DVD commentary for everything that’s in the news, only without the interesting insights. Scooter Libby? What does Hillary think? Terrorism in Britain? What would Rudy do? Still a year and a half out, and something as meaningless as the Scooter Libby “commute” almost demands a Presidential hopeful convention catered by the Associated Press.

Bush and the Republicans have to side with a criminal, the Democrats can’t say anything nice, and we have to hear about all of it. That’s why the only one who wins here is a guy named Scooter.

There’s a thread already going on about this at our political forums.
