Government/Politics, Syncopation (Off-Beat) »

I watched much of last night’s Daily Show, making my way through five minutes of douche extraordinnaire Jon Stewart’s Bush impressions to find a pretty good segment by one of their fake reporters.  The segment focused on whether or not the U.S. is ready for a black president.
They used a “Negrometer” to show just how black Obama actually is.  He scored somewhere in between George Washington and Flava Flav, and somewhere around the current Al Sharpton.
The segment also pointed out that Obama is a Halfrican-American – half halfrican, half American.  …

A Democratic Congressman named Brian Baird (from Washington) converted from (or to?) the Dark Side of the Force when he apparently visited Iraq and became convinced the surge is working.  A man who was more anti-War than Hillary Clinton in 2002 (voted against the resolution) recently said this:
As a Democrat who voted against the war from the outset and who has been frankly critical of the administration and the post-invasion strategy, I am convinced by the evidence that the situation has at long last begun to change substantially for the …

I caught a little bit of John McCain’s appearance on Jay Leno last night.  Maybe my first thought shouldn’t have been “wow, what an old fogey,” because I quickly turned on something else.  In doing so, I missed a couple of interesting self-jabs that McCain dished out:
“We are doing so poorly I thought maybe I would announce on this show that I’m running for president,” McCain told Jay Leno.
Actually, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea.  What if McCain were to ignore his poll numbers, ignore that he’s already running …

I didn’t want to write a sports story today, but this one is just too good not to talk about.  Peter King, Sports Illustrated’s content-provider extraordinnaire, put together his list of the top 500 players in the NFL.  Not top 10, 25, 50, or even 100 – 500!
Although he weighs position as having importance (QBs, DEs, and CBs get special benefits), which means that Devin Hester, the league’s actual best player,  is down at #69, it’s still a fun list to read.
Here are the top ten:
Peyton Manning
Tom Brady
LaDainian Tomlinson
Julius Peppers
Jason …

As my regular readers probably noticed, the site was down for about half the day today.  I recently switched to a new credit card number, and the automatic billing got screwed up.  BipolarNation is back and fresh as a daisy now.  Our apologies!

To say the least, the details of the Michael Vick dogfighting case were shocking and profoundly disheartening to hear. That anyone can seriously conceive of the idea of actually hanging or electrocuting dogs was disturbing in and of itself, let alone that an NFL star would actually be reckless enough to help carry it out.
But even as you watched Vick apologize to the nation on August 27th, something wasn’t quite right.  It wasn’t anything Vick was doing; his apology was performed without notes, was thorough and complete and seemed sincere.
It …

Today’s already been an insane day for news, and it’s only noon.
Alberto Gonzales Quits
As Aaron has already posted, Alberto Gonzales it outta here effective September 17th.  What’s interesting here is the total polar opposite positions on him.  Dubya says that Gonzales was an awesome public servant who only resigned because he was a distraction, and he was only a distraction because political enemies were after him.  Democrats, including Kennedy, Shumer, Edwards, Reid, and Obama, are saying this is what was needed all along.]
My question:  Would you ever resign from an …

Scientists have discovered that you can trigger Out-of-Body experiences:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6960612.stm
This got me to thinking about the ramifications of scientifically explaining something as mystical as out-of-body-experiences.  The article isn’t exactly the most conclusive piece of evidence ever (just because you can trigger one doesn’t really mean anything, does it?).
They say about 1 in 10 people have out-of-body experiences, which is higher than I would have thought.  About 600 million people who are currently alive will experience it.  But what does it mean if scientists show that out-of-body experiences are just more weird …

I had a good time in D.A.R.E. I won the essay contest, got a gold medal and my picture in the local paper. I liked seeing Deputy Bausch come in in full gear, brandishing weapons on his belt, wondering how quickly he could take down any one of us at any given moment. He looked like Roy Scheider in Jaws.
Maybe it was my upbringing, or D.A.R.E., or winning that essay contest (they say whatever opinion you espouse on paper can eventually becomes your real opinion), but I …

War in Iraq »

A study by the Project for Excellence in Journalism has shown that while the war in Iraq is still the top news issue these days, it’s getting less reported (15% of new stories).
It’s down from 22% in the first quarter of the year.  Of the big cable news stations, CNN covered Iraq the most, Fox News the least, and MSNBC was in the middle, closer to CNN.  Big shockers.
The news on the rise: the Presidential election.
Newspapers gave 44% of coverage to Republicans, with 36% to Democrats. Headlines and leads, however, …
