Terror Plot in Germany Averted
Hey, do you hear that?
Ah, yes. Normalcy. It’s a normal day today because yet another terrorist plot against the U.S., and this time, Germany, was averted. One of these days, liberals could have woken up to news about a massive chemical explosion on Ramstein Airfoce Base, with casualties around 700, and kneejerkedly bash Bush some more. But they didn’t. In a parallel universe, people are probably watching breaking news about a huge terrorist strike. But that’s not our universe.
It’s too bad security people don’t get credit for averting terrorist attacks - which is hard - as much they get blamed for them. Had this one succeeded, it would have been another major terrorist attack and probably the worst since 9/11.
Interestingly, the target wasn’t a domestic U.S. holding. I don’t want to jinx anything, but if Al-Qaeda had the growing strength it supposedly has seen in Iraq, wouldn’t they mount something better than using German nationals to target the U.S. in Europe?
If Al-Qaeda is stronger, then it says a lot about our country that we’re still having no domestic security issues - again, knock on wood. All I’m saying is - can’t the left see the positives here?
If you accept that Iraq has made our enemies more focused and stronger, you also have to accept that none of their terrorist plots against the U.S. holdings have been working, no more planes have been hijacked, and they have to rely on converted German nationals to do their dirty work. Maybe it’s because they’re focusing all of their energy on winning the P.R. war in Iraq, and even then, the American media does half their work.

The point for security-profs not getting due credit is well-made. The point of terrorism not getting stronger comes from ignorance of how terrorism works versus organized political-militia.
Terrorism is grass-roots, compared to an organized military strike, it doesn’t have the budget or the permissible brain-power to drive it. As such, the few resources (’few’ is considerable, but not in comparison to a military budget) it has , are used carefully. When a massive offensive is made against it, terrorists will lie low and wait rather than squander resources against a futile strike back.
The driving motive for military is strength. The driving motive for terrorism is passion. This isn’t to say that military has no passion, but the passion to strike back and passion of the one feeling oppressed has a different quality to it.
Thinking that terrorists will strike back is thinking in terms of military offensives of the equals in an open battle field. This isn’t the start of a chess game where both sides have equal powers. As such each has to make the most of what it has.
If one were to look at the terrorist activities of the last century in terror-dominant areas, such as Indo-Pak regions, Africa, Indonesia, a pattern is noted where even without the massive strike-back terror-activities are periodic. A small group of resources collaborate, plan and execute based on strength and motivation.
As such there’s really not much to say how effective a armed-forces launch has been against terrorists. Even when struck in their basis. Because terrorism is passion-driven, the terrorist would more likely be created by the fear created by such strikes, and this would create a supply of terrorist resources over time…. as these come of age and power.
