Fred Thompson Officially Enters Race

After five thousand years of speculation, Fred Thompson finally announced that he’s running for President of the United States on last night’s Tonight Show (video here).

Leno asked Thompson about his opponents, about being 2nd in the polls already, and about entering the race too “late.”  Fred Thompson dismissed most of the objections, and the distinct feeling I got was this:  it’s on!

I like that Thompson announced on Leno, since I usually watch it anyway, but here’s what Rush Limbaugh had to say:

But I’m not crazy about presidential candidates announcing their candidacy on these late-night shows, Leno or Letterman.  I know why they’re doing it.  Thompson has been very up-front and honest about why he’s doing it.  He’s saying, hey, look, I can reach far more ordinary Americans on Jay Leno’s show than are going to be watching the debate tonight from New Hampshire on the Fox News Channel.

Does it really matter?  Thompson said that he didn’t like our current debate process much (10 guys with 10 seconds of talking each), so he avoided yesterday’s debate and stood out by announcing his candidacy.  It actually seems like a really bold way to do it, and it might make the kind of splash he couldn’t have made by announcing it on PBS.  Your thoughts?
