Ahmadinejad’s Failed American Tour
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (I finally learned how to spell it) has been receiving treatment like an American tourist in France. I guess it makes sense. A guy who’s been compared to Hitler (even called a ‘mini-Hitler’) can’t come over and expect the red carpet to be rolled out. Still, what if Hitler visited America in the late 30’s?
That might be what this is comparable to, since Iran is an emerging, potential nuclear power. The only thing Ahmadinejad hasn’t done is invade eastern European countries.
My question is: why are Americans, even liberals at Columbia University, so united against this guy, but so polarized on Iraq? Because he’s evil? Well, Saddam Hussein was in charge of Iraq when we invaded. You’ll probably say they’re two different countries, but since Iran is helping Iraqis kill Americans, doesn’t that sort of just lump all of them as “bad guys?”
What’s really so different about them? You’d think the president of Columbia wanted to go to war the way he’s talking.
Speaking of which, French President Sarkozy is saying war is a good possibility. In fact, as he address the United Nations, he sounded very un-French:
Iran was entitled to nuclear power for civilian purposes, he said, “but if we allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, we would incur an unacceptable risk to stability in the region and in the world”.
In a broader warning against the dangers of appeasement, the new French leader said: “Weakness and renunciation do not lead to peace. They lead to war.”
But if you’re Ahmadinejad, and you believe in your cause, what do you do? You’re going to go nuclear as soon as possible. Even if you decide to wimp out, you can just let U.N. inspectors in and go the route Saddam Hussein never did.
Americans disagree on Iraq, but seem to be unified against Iran. The United States already has enough to go to war with Iran. Don’t believe me? We want to war with Iraq with even less.
So while Ahmadinejad’s American tour is a failure, at least it’s brought some awareness to what’s going on. We need to start planning for this before things escalate.
