5 Reasons We’re Winning the War in Iraq
That’s right, we’re winning. Despite how you feel about the war - even I’ve admitted I’d rather have never gone in there - liberals reading this should hold to their “open-minded, objective” principles and try to accept that the evidence suggests we’re actually not only winning, we’re kind of whooping butt.
I mean, think about it: lots of U.S. soldiers dead? Yeah, what did you expect when you’re fighting an army of guerillas who don’t value anyone’s life? A political quagmire? Yeah, what did you expect when we went tearing down a country so that we could build it back up?
Honestly: what did we expect from this? That the three weeks it took to get into Baghdad and tear down the Saddam statue is how long it would take to set up a Democracy? The Middle East is too ferocious and complicated for that.
Luckily, there’s lots of good news to report in Iraq. How do you know that’s true? Because the media’s not reporting any news from Iraq.
The Iraq headlines are gone. Stories about the surge are gone, or buried to page 18. Any news you hear about Iraq will be pessimistic, but only because that’s what will grab readers.
No one really wants war. Most of us didn’t want it. I don’t want it. I’d prefer the U.S. spend its money on other things, like tax cuts. The Pope didn’t like the war, either. Still, you liberals have to be objective and open-minded in keeping with your principles: we’re winning, and the war does have lots of positive accomplishments to its resume.
Reason #1: Osama bin Laden and Co. Are Definitely on The Run

Like it or not, the war in Iraq has become the front for terrorism. Liberals can deny this all they want, but Osama bin Laden is saying this himself, and Al-Qaeda put virtually all of its resources, counting on the notoriously gay American media to turn public opinion against Bush.
Even so, Al-Qaeda has been pushed out of Baghdad. In October, U.S. troop casualties hit a 17-month low. Al-Qaeda’s new hideouts are the mountains of Northern Iraq, and support in the Muslim world is starting to dwindle. According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Jack Kelly, the war in Iraq has been a “catostrophe” - for Osama bin Laden.
Reason #2: Sects Are Joining Up Against Al-Qaeda

Having both Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Iraq definitely complicates things, but they’re starting to team up and fight against Al-Qaeda themselves.
Says the L.A. Times:
“Commanders in the field think they have tapped into a genuine public expression of reconciliation that has outpaced the elected government’s progress on mending the sectarian rift.”
So, when a liberal admits military progress in Iraq and belittles the political progress, just remember the Iraqi Neighborhood Watch.
Reason #3: Public Support is Fading From The Democrats…

…slowly. The Democrats look bad even to people who didn’t support the war as the frequency of “quagmire!” headlines declines and they have to begrudgingly accept the military success of the surge. It will take a while, but the public isn’t as outraged as it once was about how things are going.
Hey, maybe Hillary’s decision to vote in favor of the war will help her in the general election by ‘08.
Reason #4: Attacks in Iraq Hitting Low Levels
Source: “U.S. Says Attacks in Iraq Fell to Feb. 2006 Level”
The decline in attacks has been falling since the surge started, meaning that there’s hard evidence that suggests the surge is working. That’s why Democratic leaders haven’t denied this; that would just be silly.
One reason for the decline in the attacks is that the surge has crippled Al-Qaeda (see reason #1) and that volunteers are beginning to take it upon themselves for protection (see reason #2).
Reason #5: Baghdad Is Reviving
Source: “Baghdad Comes Alive”
There had been four car bombings in Baghdad a day; recently, it’s been less than one a week. According to this author, shops and markets are beginning to stay open later. Kids are playing soccer in the streets, and “parks are crowded with strollers.”
By the way, people have rightly blasted Bush for his “Mission: Accomplished” craziness, but guess what the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki recently said? He declared victory against militias and terrorist groups. That sounds like things are going well.
