Was Ebenezer Scrooge A Conservative Republican?
A small “rant” in the Chicago Sun-Times says that in “A Christmas Carol,” Ebenezer Scrooge goes from “traditional, conservative Republican” to “bleeding-heart liberal.” The rant doesn’t seem to say that this is a good thing - but is it even true?
For a lot of people, it probably is. But the stereotypical view of Republicans as cold-hearted Mr. Burnses couldn’t be more wrong.
Too many liberals equate governmental redistribution of wealth with actual charity. The difference is that charity is when you give something that belonged to you. Governmental distribution of wealth is when you just decide that people richer than you should have to pay it. Really, which seems grumpier?
Republicans are more charitable than Democrats. And instead of being mean and grumpy, they’re happier than Democrats and Independents. From a personal viewpoint, being charitable seems to be much better for your mental health than voting for politicians who like taxing the rich. See the difference?
The answer to the question posed in the title of this post is: yes, Scrooge was a Conservative Republican type - once he changed from grumpy old Democrat (remember - Democrats are less happy). He learned the power of personal charity. Which Republicans excel at, and which the Republican party leans on more.
Not bad for a moderate party.
