7 Questions and Answers about the Iowa Caucuses
By now, you’ve probably heard that Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama won Iowa. Here are my thoughts about yesterday’s caucuses.
Who Gains the Most (Besides Huckabee and Obama)?
-The Johns: McCain and Edwards. McCain showed up strong enough to bear mentioning, and he was already banking on New Hampshire anyway. In fact, yesterday, people had to interview him there, not in Iowa. Edwards had been aiming for second place and desperately wanted to avoid third. Although he did it narrowly, it was enough.
Who Loses the Most?
-Mitt Romney. He really banked on Iowa. The good thing for him is that he’s the only Republican candidate (at least as far as I see) who had a shot at both Iowa and New Hampshire. He could really use a first place finish before going into South Carolina.
What Happened to Rudy?
-Rudy completely gave up on Iowa, and it showed: even Ron Paul placed above him. Believe me, I’m glad. Maybe he can still run as a Democrat. He’s looking now to some of the more industrial states, perhaps Michigan, as well as Florida. But he’s really sunk far.
How Did Huckabee Do It?
-In Huckabee’s victory speech, guess which familiar face was a few levels behind him? Chuck Norris. Man, that guy really campaigns for Huckabee. Joking aside, Iowa’s rural population seemed to be for Huckabee and he resonated with the evangelicals, as was predicted.
How Did Obama Do It?
-The young vote came out, plus he was just more likeable as a candidate for change than Hillary. He was on more “second choice” ballots. But it wasn’t as decisive as Huckabee’s win. It’s a bruise to Hillary, but none of the top three are out of it.
Who’s Still Alive?
-Fred Thompson did well enough to hold out hope, and so did Bill Richardson, who might just be running for Vice President. Ron Paul placed over Rudy, and you’d think his strong showing would get him a podium at upcoming debates.
What Will New Hampshire Mean?
-New Hampshire is a chance for Romney to gain ground on Huckabee, and it’s a chance for John McCain to cast himself as a sleeper. But if Huckabee does strong there, it shows he has a wider appeal than originally thought, which would help him nationally. Hillary’s stronger in New Hampshire, so she has a chance there.
