Mitt Romney: In the Lead (Despite What You’ve Heard)
I’m getting pretty sick of hearing that Mitt Romney “needs” Michigan to stay in the race. Where is this perception coming from? We haven’t even hit any day with “Super” in the nickname yet.
Romney needs Michigan? Take a look at the current delegate placings:
- Romney: 30
- Huckabee: 21
- McCain: 10
- Thompson: 6
Michigan is big, but only half big this year, as they’re being penalized half their delegates.
David Freddoso lists the upcoming primaries:
- Jan 15th: Michigan, 30 delegates
- Jan 19th: Nevada, 34 delegates
- Jan 19th: South Carolina, 24 delegates
- Jan 22nd: Louisiana, 47 delegates
- Jan 29th: Florida, 57 delegates
Says Freddoso:
Let’s say Romney finishes second in Michigan — or even a close third. He still has a chance to win here, and thanks to party sanctions on South Carolina — one of the five states stripped of half their delegates by the RNC for moving up their primaries — there are more delegates at stake.
Does that sound like Romney needs Michigan? Not really. Especially when he leads going into Michigan, which is today, and stands a chance at the next state, Nevada.
Silly.
P.S. The perception is that Romney is a flip-flopping schemer. An article in the New York Times says his perception is wrong.
