Huckabee: Federalism=Innovation

In last week’s Republican presidential debate that was hosted by CNN at the Reagan Library, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made an excellent point regarding the beauty of our federalist system.

When asked if he would back California’s wishes to impose its own emissions standards over the federal EPA’s (California’s proposal is actually stricter), he said yes without a doubt, then proceeded to discuss how federalism is the best system when it comes to spurring innovation because if a state enacts a policy or program that yields great results, other states are going to look for ways to copy it. On the other hand, if a state tests the waters on a policy or program, only to discover that it isn’t feasible, then other states will know to stay away from it. Although, to be fair, some policies/programs work for some states better than others, but you get the point he was making.

It was a beautiful point Huckabee made, one that I never really gave much thought to prior to his remarks. Just as competition among businesses plays a role in better ways of doing/making things, so does competition among the states. The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that the Founding Fathers are somehow divine in their wisdom.
