The Big Super Tuesday Post
It’s almost midnight as I write this and Milwaukee is in the middle of a foot of snowfall. Sounds like a good time for a nice big reaction post from Tuesdays’s big primaries.
Who Won What?

As it stands, thanks to Drudge:
Clinton: AR, AZ, CA, MA, NY, NJ, OK, TN
Obama: AL, CT, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, MN, MO, ND, UT
Huckabee: AL, AR, GA, TN, WV
McCain: AZ, CA, CT, DE, IL, MO, NJ, NY, OK
Romney: CO, MA, MN, MT, ND, UT
What Happened?
- McCain broke away, solidified by a late California win.
- Hillary and Obama didn’t solve anything definitively, which means the Democratic nomination might end up being more interesting than the Republican one now.
- Early in the day, Hillary couldn’t stop coughing. In the words of Dan Dierdorf, you don’t think these candidates are damaging their health out there on the campaign trail?
- In an anti-Romney move, McCain and Huckabee blocked Mitt from winning West Virginia. Essentially, if you can’t tell, Huckabee is still in this race to win the vice presidency from McCain. Kind of a low blow to Romney, who is now looking like he might be out of steam. (I finally caved and echoed the mainstream media; I’m weak).
- Romney continued to destroy McCain among conservatives, at least out in California. Oddly, Obama and Clinton split “liberal” voters almost exactly there.
- Huckabee did way, way too well, even though it was in the Confederacy. He’s practically back in it if Romney still is.
- Do we call this a Huckabee “comeback”? Everyone knows he was a spoiler - so what?
- McCain won California, but the state gets split up, so it wasn’t as decisive as it could have been. (Eh, it was kind of decisive). Romney had been leading there in some polls. As mentioned, Romney beat McCain on conservative vote again.
- Obama has technically won the most states as of writing this, with 11.
Who’s Leading Now?
Obama’s fleet has claimed a delegate lead, and McCain is clearly the leader for the Republicans, with Romney and Huckabee nearly splitting second place now. It’s questionable whether Romney would be leading even if he took Huckabee’s delegates.
Random Thoughts
- How much do you think just hearing about who’s doing well early changed how people were voting? This is significant since California was a lot later than most of the other states - what if it comes out that Romney is starting to sweep? Does he win California?
- Hillary Clinton has more than one home state. Isn’t that supposed to not be possible? (I’m talking about Arkansas and New York, both of which she won).
- Everyone won their home states. Obama in Illinois, Romney in Massachusetts, McCain in Arizona, Hillary in Arkansas and New York, and Huckabee in Arkansas.
- Now I have to start really evaluating John McCain as a candidate, and as potentially my candidate. What do I like about him? He’s pro-life and pro-surge. What don’t I like? Just about everything else. A guy like that is supposed to be the mainstream conservative?
- Super Tuesday was supposed to clear everything up. Instead, Huckabee turned into Muckabee and the Democrats are far from settled. Maybe now is when it gets interesting?
- I’ve come up with my official nicknames for candidates: Obama is Ashy Larry. McCain is Surly. Huckabee is Muckabee. Hillary is Billary.
