Test of Faith? Test THIS, Mamma Jammas!

So let me get this straight: you’re over 50, have been Catholic all your life, used your faith to get you through some “tough times” (well, if you consider puberty a universal trial), and you’ve held to Catholicism all your life. Then, the media rides the “molestation” wave, and now - NOW - after all these years, you’re ready to give it up?

Idiots like this exist.

Writing the community column for the Milwaukee paper, the Journal-Sentinel, Jeff “M.” Jensen, had this to say:

Like most of my contemporaries, the plunge into puberty and beyond was a time to question the meaning of my life, especially as it related to the existence of a higher power. During this tumultuous time, the Catholic Church provided me the peace of mind I needed to be secure in my beliefs.

That was then. This is now.

The recent glut of information regarding the sexual abuse of children by a few of these papal extensions [priests] has provided a sobering reality check for me and, I believe, for Catholics everywhere.

This outrage is just the latest blow my faith has had to withstand, but given the nature of this offense and the elevated status of those involved, it may turn out to be a knockout punch.

Okay, I think he’s done.

This has been an issue for a long time - ever since the media frenzy over Catholic sexual abuse scandals became the storm it was. Sure, it’s a real problem - and in some cases, cost Churches a lot of money - but a “blow” to one’s “faith”? Really?

My guess is that these Catholics’ predisposition to support the priesthood really wasn’t all that strong to begin with if a few bad apples make you question the nature of reality:

These transgressions have given new birth to the arguments against celibacy and the repression of procreative behavior sworn to the Catholic clergy.

Interesting - “new birth” to arguments against celibacy. You’re saying you want child molesters to have more sex?

Any healthy person should be able to get by without having sex - at least, your first thought shouldn’t turn to “gee, I wonder if I should abuse children now.” To equate the child molestation problem with mere “repression” is just another way of saying that you thought Catholics have been doing it all wrong BEFORE this media frenzy.

You don’t have to be a Catholic to agree with me, I don’t think. You all have principles that you stand behind, even if that principle is “no rules, woo!” Because some people are mentally disturbed shouldn’t shake your faith.

Yes, priests are leaders of local communities and should be an example to those they serve. (Kind of like teachers, right? The same teachers who molest kids way more often?) But because some have had failings in this doesn’t mean there’s no point in having them.

Go into a confessional and a Catholic priest will forgive you for anything. To expect the same from the Catholics who have, in turn, abandoned these Priests is apparently too much to ask.
