A Quick Comparison: Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln

To a pro-lifer, even writing the “Barack Obama” and “Abraham Lincoln” in the same blog post makes me feel like throwing up, but I can’t help but notice some interesting parallels (and perpendicularities) between the two politicians from Illinois.  So I thought I’d make a list of them, just to keep track of it in my mind.

Some of this is relevant (like experience), some isn’t (like how tall they are).
Similarities (yup, there are some):

  • Both politicians rose to fame in Illinois, though the state is now known as the “Land of Lincoln” and not the Land of Obama.
  • Both were/are inexperienced:  Lincoln even less so than Obama - his highest office held before the Presidency was a seat on the House of Representatives, elected in 1846.  Obama has only been Senator in Illinois for a few years, and it’s the highest office he’s held.
  • Tall and skinny:  Lincoln was 6′4″ even without the funny hat.  Obama is 6′2″.
  • Both were against major wars in their days - no, I’m not talking about the Civil War for Lincoln.  Instead, as a Representative (a Whig) he was against the Mexican-American War, criticizing President Polk as a W-esque “perplexed man.”

Differences:

  • Obama attended Harvard and Columbia Universities; Abraham Lincoln was mostly self-taught and only had 18 years of schooling.
  • Obama is a African-American, Lincoln was simply in support of them.  Said Stephen Douglas:  “[Lincoln is in] in favor of the citizenship of the negro.”  Can you believe someone used that as a negative?
  • Lincoln was the first Republican.  If Obama is elected, he will be another Democrat.
  • South Carolina isn’t threatening to secede if Obama is elected.  Actually, if you don’t think America has made any progress since then; in 1860, war broke out because an anti-slavery President was elected.  If Obama is elected, I don’t think we’ll have to fight about it.
  • I wish Lincoln had lived longer; I just wish Obama was conservative.
