How To Stop Criminals: Allow Guns
After the recent shootings at Northern Illinois University, one of my first thoughts was to ask myself a tough political question. Should/could we prevent further attacks like this with stricter gun laws?
It took me about fifteen seconds to come to my senses. No, of course not: less guns aren’t the answer. Less gun bans are.
Gun restrictions are just a line in a littany of “protect you from yourself” regulations we get from liberals all the time. We can’t be trusted to eat trans fats, we can’t be trusted to use our own money (unless it comes in Super Mega Rebate form, along with money for the poor and elderly!), we can’t be trusted to manage the economy into a new era of free prosperity. With gun restrictions, we can’t be trusted with guns.
You might be thinking, “hey, Dan, you might be right about liberals, but when it comes to guns, we really can’t be trusted. Just look at all the shootings.”
Really? We can’t be trusted to protect ourselves? Humans won’t act out of the need for the primal instinct of survival?
Sure, there will always be nuts. But creating “gun-free zones” just gives these nuts places to go where they know no one else will have guns - why do you think all the shootings happen in malls and schools in the first place?
You’re not going to 100% guarantee that nuts don’t get guns, even with total gun ban laws. They’ll find ways. Meanwhile, the gun bans just ensure that ordinary citizens - the non-crazy people who don’t have access to the black market - are defenseless.
Gun laws aren’t an effective deterrent - most of these extreme shooters end up killing themselves. Sometimes, gun bans get passed in local areas and gun violence goes UP. Instead, don’t you think it would be a deterrent to know that at least one out of a classroom of fifty students is probably packing and can quickly put your crime to an end? I don’t see these gunmen going in and shooting up NRA rallies.
You don’t have to be a gun-toting, NASCAR-loving Charlton Heston wannabe to be in support of gun rights.
With gun violence, liberals again try to treat the symptom of a problem instead of the problem itself. Don’t try to help crazy people - try to make it so they have a ten day waiting period before they can shoot up a mall! Their solution, as always, is more big government and less trust in Americans, who have a stellar record of courage and even stop crimes by themselves from time to time.
