When you win a Medal of Honor, unfortunately, it usually means you’re dead – acts of bravery extreme enough to warrant one of them typically end up with the recipient dying.
Unfortunately, that was the case with Petty Officer Michael A. Monsoor.
Monsoor was part of a sniper security team in Ramadi with three other SEALs and eight Iraqi soldiers, according to a Navy account. An insurgent fighter threw the grenade, which struck Monsoor in the chest before falling in front of him.
Monsoor then threw himself on the grenade, according to a …

I’ve already written that Mitt Romney would be a great choice for John McCain to pick as his vice presidential candidate.  It looks like this is becoming a possibility.
Associated Press:
In a show of Republican unity, one-time bitter foes John McCain and Mitt Romney raised money and campaigned together Thursday for a single goal – getting McCain elected president.
“We are united. Now our job is to energize our party,” the Arizona senator said in an airport hangar, flanked by Romney and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., an early McCain supporter. Both …

I’m no Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, or St. Augustine, so part of me is saying “hey, you’re not intellectually qualified by any means to say anything of substance in a ‘Defense of God’ post.”
But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so here goes.
Holy Bleep, the Universe Exists
I like to wonder how I would react to looking up at the night sky if I were a caveman living in 10,000 B.C.  What would I think those lights were?  Angels looking down at me?  Why is it all …

The race for the Democratic nomination is much more interesting when there’s nothing for the candidates to do but make trouble.
It all seemed to start when footage Obama’s former (or current?  I don’t know) pastor started getting played over and over again on Fox News.
[Note:  That which appears in my normal "quotes" box here aren't actual quotes.  You'll see that in a few seconds.]
Jeremiah Wright:  Meh meh meh!  The government gave me AIDS!  [Bleep] America!  I use Hillary Clinton in the same sentence as the N-word!  Hibbery hibbery doo!
Conservative pundits:  …

According to Jane’s Country Risk, the United States isn’t the world’s most stable and prosperous nation – and it’s not even in the top twenty.  We rank in at #22, behind countries like the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Vatican.
How did they rate it?  Observe:
under the rating system, which took into account each nation’s political structures, social and economic trends, military and security risks and external relations, the Vatican state scored an average of 99 out of 100.
The United States still fared well, scoring an average of 93 out of …

The same guy, James Thomson of University of Wisconsin-Madison who started the embryonic stem cell debate effectively ended it when he and Shinya Yamanaka of Japan announced that you can match cells from human skin, without using embryos.
A moral debate has collapsed under the weight of scientific progress. Says the New York Times:
Now with the new technique, which involves adding just four genes to ordinary adult skin cells, it will not be long, he says, before the stem cell wars are a distant memory. “A decade from now, this …

Someone from a right-to-life organization at UCLA made some news recently when they called in to Planned Parenthood of Idaho, asking to make a donation specifically to aid in the killing of black infants.
What’s the crazy thing about this story (aside from the fact that killing babies is legal)? The representative at Planned Parenthood in Idaho was ready to accept it!
Check out this transcript, courtesy of the Advocate:
Autumn Kersey of Planned Parenthood in Boise: Good afternoon, this is Autumn.
Donor: Hello, Autumn, I’m interested in making a donation today.
Kersey: Fantastic!
Donor: What about abortions for the …

Obama was supposed to give a speech on race, but instead we got the Communist Manifesto.
This speech had many failings, so let’s try to tackle them chronologically, in the order they appeared in his speech.
First,
What we have already achieved gives us hope – the audacity to hope – for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.
Obama’s losing numbers over Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his lead in the polls is dwindling, and he’s getting attacked from left and right (well, right). It’s SO EASY to separate yourself from this guy. …

Yesterday the Supreme Court debated a longtime Washington D.C. ban on handguns as it pertains to the U.S. Constitution.  Hippies and hicks alike protested outside the Supreme Court with opposing signs like “guns kill” and “guns are an American right.”
The day ended as hicks celebrated the delibrations by breaking whiskey bottles, shooting their guns into the air, and shouting “yee-hah!”  Hippies, demoralized, went home and drank herbal teas or banged bongos or whatever it is hippies do.
Americans have a right to own guns, Supreme Court justices declared Tuesday in a …

Barack Obama gave a speech about race and Jeremiah Wright today, addressing it sort of in the same way Mitt Romney did about Mormonism.
If I was his speechwriter, here’s what I would have come up with.
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming out today.  I talk to you here today in the city of Philadelphia, home to Benjamin Franklin, to address some important issues that the American people have the right to hear about.
Recent emergence of controversial and anti-American comments by Jeremiah Wright, my former pastor, has given me cause …
