I’m still working on the Four-Hour Workweek, but in the meantime rising gas prices have actually meant that some companies are offering their employees the chance to have a three-day weekend…EVERY weekend.
Observe:
When Ohio’s Kent State University offered custodial staff the option of working four days a week instead of five to cut commuting costs, most jumped at the chance, part of a U.S. trend aimed at combating soaring gasoline prices.
“We offered it to 94 employees and 78 have taken us up on it,” said university spokesman Scott Rainone.
Only 78 out …

Paul Ryan (Republican U.S. Representative from Wisconsin’s 1st District) is the Bobby Jindal of Wisconsin:  a young, smart conservative.  Another similarity?  He’s been tossed around as a possible VP pick for McCain.  McCain, by the way, is visiting my home state today:
U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) will join Republican presidential nominee John McCain at this afternoon’s town hall meeting in Greendale, according to the McCain campaign.
Ryan has been mentioned by some observers as a possible vice presidential pick for McCain, most notably in February by columnist Robert Novak.
I’m pretty hesitant …

Words mean a lot. Before we had words, humanity was a wandering race of nomadic moobs, oblivious to the possibilities of technology and civilization. After words, we have produced this, this, and this. As you see, words are not entirely meaningless.
That’s why the debate over abortion, an important debate no doubt, has its own lingo. Thing is, I’m wondering if the lingo needs a re-write.
In the abortion debate, you have, essentially, two types of people: pro-choicers and pro-lifers. Obviously, both terms are used by …

Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan is rolling in the dough (at the time of this posting, he’s #1 on that link to the Amazon bestsellers). Why? Another behind-the-scenes “tell-all” bashing President Bush. Or, to McClellan, President Bu$h. If that reference was too unclear for you, how about this: “I’m gon’ make me some Bush-bashing moneys!”
What other assumption is a nation supposed to make? McClellan himself made fun of tell-all memoirs back in the day. Suddenly he appears anti-Bush (though claiming to …

One of the biggest stories in current events is the high price of gas (wow – remember when it was Iraq?).  This got me to thinking:  as a conservative, free-market guy, how would I reduce gas prices in the first place?
Well, first, I’d note that it’s not the government’s responsibility to “solve” any of our problems – but given our current situation, there would be some ways to take government out of the equation and get prices back to a more manageable level.  Here’s President Dan’s 5 ways to reduce …

Here’s a video where Obama sums up his military policy.  I mainly had a problem with this statement:
I will slow our development of future combat systems.
Sigh.
Barack Obama’s foreign policy: speak softly and carry no stick.  I have a suggestion for the person to be his Secretary of State: Pussy Galore.

John McCain is having a little get-together over Memorial Day weekend at his place in Sedona, Arizona.  Guess who’s on the guest list?  Mitt Romney, Bobby Jindal, and Charlie Crist.
In other words, probably McCain’s top three choices to be his vice president.
I hope it’s not Jindal.  Jindal’s only 36 and has a future ahead of him – I’d rather see him as President in 2016 than as McCain’s VP in 2008.  Although, who knows, it could be both!
Crist, likewise, I’m not thrilled about.  He’s kind of moderate – recall his …

I’ve made my position on global warming clear:  man’s role in it is overrated, there’s really nothing to be afraid of, and most politicians just use it to justify more government interference with the market.
But what about John McCain’s position on global warming?  Few of his policies so exemplify McCain’s unnecessary pandering to moderates and the left than his position, stated as thus:
we need to deal with the central facts of rising temperatures, rising waters, and all the endless troubles that global warming will bring. We stand warned by serious …

British scientists are going to be allowed to research diseases using “human-animal” embryos, leading many to wonder what kind of path British medicine is going down: the way of Dr. Jonas Salk or Dr. Frankenstein.
They’re called “admixed” embryos, and feature putting human cell nuclei into animal eggs. The theoretical embryos wouldn’t be allowed to live for more than two weeks.
Like most of this kind of embryo-level research, critics are saying that not only does this kind of research cross some weird and immoral boundaries, but that the benefits …

Is Michelle Obama a political issue?  Are Republicans sinking to new lows by attacking her?
For that matter, is Barack Obama right when he says this:
“The GOP, should I be the nominee, I think can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record,” Obama said. “I’ve been in public life for 20 years. I expect them to pore through everything that I’ve said, every utterance, every statement. And to paint it in the most undesirable light possible. That’s what they do.”
“But I do want to say this to …
