What Would the 7 Extra States Be?

Barack Obama has American flag issues.  First, he doesn’t like wearing the traditional flag pin on his lapel.  Now, I guess, he’s not even sure how many stars should go in the upper left corner.

I guess when you tour harder than the Rolling Stones, you’re bound to make a few mistakes.  At a recent speech, Obama mentioned that he’s been to “57 states.”

“I’ve now been in 57 states, I think — one left to go,” Obama said. “Alaska and Hawaii I was not allowed to go to … my staff could not justify it,” he added after hearing laughter from the audience.

Obama apparently did not realize that he had said 57, instead of 47, states visited so far.

But he’s been to 46 so far:

Obama has actually been to 46 U.S. states so far during the campaign. He has not visited South Dakota, Arkansas, Alaska or Hawaii, an aide said.

I’m interested - what comprises the other seven states?  Mexican provinces?  North and South Florida?

He later addressed his mistake:

At a later stop Obama was talking with reporters and expressed concern he’d also mis-stated the number of potential cyclone victims in Burma. He said, “”I hope I said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. I understand I said there were 57 states today. It’s a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh.” At that point, an aide cut him off and ushered journalists out.

Now, people are jumping on it, and you can even buy a “57 state” flag pin for your own lapel.

So now, I want to do this - I want to think of seven states these extra stars could represent.  Here’s my list:

1.  Puerto Rico
2.  North Florida (South Florida already included in the other stars)
3.  East Carolina, which has only been theoretical.
4.  Baja
5.  Virgin Islands
6.  Columbia
7.  Lincoln (not my idea; this would be in Eastern Washington and Idaho)

Other potential state or ideas people have had:  “Superior” in Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, East Oregon, separating upstate and downstate New York, and “Jefferson” from Northern California and Oregon.
