The “Patriot” Label and Why Obama Could Win in a Landslide
One annoying thing about us conservatives is that we’re obsessed with labelling things “patriotic” or “unpatriotic.” Sure, it’s important, but it’s so overused that it basically becomes a meaningless way to express your dislike for a Democrat.
Sure, many Democrats hate themselves, their offspring, and their parents – so it’s no wonder they hate their home country. But conservatives over-emphasize this “patriot” label as if being a “patriot” suddenly makes your opinions credible.
What happens when a Democrat who’s actually a patriot comes along? Are their opinions on big government and gay marriage suddenly valid? No! Republicans won’t listen to them anyway; and the “patriot” label proves itself as generally irrelevant when it comes to real debate.
I was thinking about this as it looks like the Tennessee Republican party is attacking Michelle Obama (Mobama) for her first-country-pride-in-my-adult-life comments a few months back.
In a preview of the political onslaught Michelle Obama may face in the fall, the Tennessee Republican Party unveiled a Web video Thursday highlighting her comment that she was proud of America “for the first time in my adult life.”
…
“This is a shameful attempt to attack a woman who has repeatedly said she wouldn’t be here without the opportunities and blessings of this nation,” Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan said.
…
“And if the Tennessee Republican Party has a problem with Senator Obama, maybe next time they’ll have the courage to address him directly instead of attacking his family.”
To me, the Obama campaign came off way better than the Republicans in that article. The Republicans are REACTING to Obama’s campaign, which gives them the opportunity to basically say the Republicans don’t have any balls.
The reason I connect the anti-Michelle attacks with the “I’m more patriotic than thou” hibbity-jibbity is because it’s a stupid strategy for conservatives. Conservatives are already patriots; they can only preach to the choir here.
The Republican strategy, thus far, stinks. Think about it:
-They nominated a 71-year-old conservative liberal Republican who excites no one
-Because he’s too moderate, no one rallies behind him
-McCain won’t go negative, which means he can’t exploit Obama’s horrible, inexperienced record
-We’re turning people off by talking about Michelle Obama’s patriotism
The general election season hasn’t really started yet, but I see this becoming a trend: Obama appearing stronger than McCain because he invented his message first, and McCain will just be reacting to him.
You can’t even win chess this way; how is McCain supposed to win the Presidency? For crying out loud, look at what Republicans are coming up with for slogans!
Tell me that isn’t reacting to Obama’s popularity, instead of dictating strategy to HIM. How is McCain supposed to win with BARACK OBAMA’S BLEEPING STRATEGY? At best, he can only be “a poor man’s Barack Obama.”
All these conservative pundits are unhappy with McCain, but they never stood by anyone to beat him. I’m talking about you, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Rush was too busy attacking Mike Huckabee to rally his 20 million listeners behind a candidate stronger than McCain, and Hannity backed another weak candidate (Giuliani).
Conservatives should have embraced someone like Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney months ago, stood by him, tauted conservative principles, and forced Obama to prove he can do better. This isn’t just hindsight.
Now, because people are sheep, I’m beginning to believe Obama could win the general election in a landslide. It will be credited to his “unifying” abilities, but really, he’ll just beat up on weak competition.
Think about it. Obama says “Change you can believe in!” and flashes a smile. McCain says “Change you can believe in [I'm older and less charistmatic by the way]!” And Republicans say “But Michelle Obama hates America!”
If you were a douchebag moderate with no standards, who would YOU vote for?
