I’ve heard the argument that today’s conservatives would have been, often, on the wrong side of history.  Conservatives were like the Confederate slave masters.  Conservatives would have been against civil rights.  Conservatives hate change, and would have been against all good change.
The word “conservative” carries connotations of being against change, against reform.  I think that’s incorrect.
