Boring
Watching last night’s debate and debate preparations, I actually considered the 2000 Bush vs. Gore town hall debate to be the “golden days.” That says something about how boring these debates have been.
Where’s the fire? Where’s the passion? Where are the principles? Where are the exchanges? Where are the awkward moments in which Obama walks up to McCain while McCain makes his point, forcing McCain to give a “howyoudoin” nod to Obama?
Both candidates were unexciting. I’ll go through each specifically.
Barack Obama:
Barack Obama is the most overrated speaker I can remember. He gets credit for being charismatic, but somehow has a license for unlimited “uh” and “aaaand” vocal ticks.
As much as I could admonish him for not taking any risks in these debates, it’s sort of like running the clock out with a lead early in the fourth quarter. He doesn’t need to take any risks – he needs to handle McCain’s risks (more on McCain in a moment).
Now, obviously I’m a conservative so I hated most of Barack’s answers, particularly that prosperity doesn’t “trickle down.” But I can see why he’s going the way he is – he keeps talking on and on about the middle class, and how he’s going to lower taxes for them. It makes him sound like he’s a moderate leftist or a left-leaning moderate. I can see how the idiot undecided voters would think this appeals to them. (Hint: it has to do with them being idiots).
John McCain:
Ugh. He now wants to add $300 billion to the bailout? Are you kidding me? We’re supposed to get behind this guy as fiscally conservative and anti-big spending when he wants that much money tossed into an already misguided plan?
He continues to refuse to go after Obama. He’s not taking risks and he’s not getting anywhere near the character issues. As if a Vietnam war veteran should be afraid of getting in a character debate with Barack Obama of all people. He’s down in the polls – what does he think is going to appeal to undecided voters?
All in all, this debate was a big-time disappointment: it was both unentertaining and I wasn’t roused as a conservative.
I keep feeling like these debates are ties, or close to them. That might be true. But that works to Obama’s advantage because he already has the elad. McCain is behind: he could really use a flat-out victory.
