Liberals remind me of the old Henry Ford quote, when he said (paraphrased) “the customer can have any color he wants – as long as it’s black.” To liberals, you can protest all you want, and as violently as you want – as long as you’re protecting on behalf of some liberal sacred cow like gay marriage or the imagined right to choose.

Case in point: New York City is considering legislation that would create a 15-foot “buffer zone” between abortion protesters and clinics.

As Michelle Malkin notes, pro-gay rights protesters currently enjoy the right to walk right up to Mormon churches and shout “Mormon scum.”

Says Mary Claire Kendal at the New York Daily News:

Under the law, exactly what constitutes a violation is vague. The penalty is not – up to a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail for first-time offenses; and, subsequently, fines of up to $5,000 and/or one year in jail. Moreover, the bill would give abortion providers the right to charge harassment on a patient’s behalf, without any requirement that the patient herself testify.

Among the anti-abortion organizations that would be pushed to the fringes is Expectant Mother Care, a Bronx-based group that trains staff to educate pregnant women. Since 1985, 28,000 of these women have chosen to give birth because an EMC staff member or volunteer in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or the Bronx has helped them realize that “pro-choice” can mean the choice to give their baby life.

EMC believes in peaceful persuasion. It tells its staff only to inform and encourage – never to harass. Yet now, it seems as though EMC and other groups like it are the ones being harassed.
